What's Happening at The Garden 9:10?

August 2024

  • The heat has finally abated, and we are harvesting produce daily in the garden.  A HUGE  thank-you goes out to the faithful volunteers who braved the extreme temperatures and showed up in the garden to keep it going under such harsh conditions.  You’re our angels!  Even if you’re not able to weed, prune, or pick produce there are other ways you can help.

Wash and prepare produce for delivery to Lake Travis Crisis Ministries or Helping Hand Crisis Ministries.

    • Bring your composting items (eggshells, coffee grounds, leaves,) in paper bags to the garden.  There are three large metal trashcans on the garden drive where you can deposit your items.
    • Pick up eggshells and coffee grounds from businesses that are collecting these items for us.  (See details below for more information).
  • Compost, Compost, Compost–We need your compost!  It’s amazing how much is needed to adequately fertilize our garden beds!  As leaves begin to fall, please consider bagging yours (paper bags, please) and bringing them to the garden.  Also, we have a group of volunteers who have invited local businesses to contribute their eggshells and coffee grounds, and we need help recruiting more businesses and picking up the donations from the businesses already participating.    She has an information sheet which explains the need and the procedure for businesses to follow and can answer your questions.  If you visit any of the following businesses, please thank them for their participation:  Vivel Crepes, Maple Street Biscuits, Cafe Lago, Love and Cookies, Lakeway Activity Center, Gigi’s Cupcakes, and ATX.

  • The Green Thumbkins from the Lakeway Church Christian Preschool toured the garden and meet weekly to learn simple garden skills, including planting, tending, and harvesting.  They will plant potatoes, garlic, and carrots for the first fall harvest.

July 2024 update

  • The garden received a grant from the Dansby Grant Foundation in the amount of $7,100 for the purchase of 2 refrigerators and stainless steel tables. They are expected to arrive soon.
  • Trays for delivering produce have arrived. Bill Riddle delivers the produce to Lake Travis Crisis Ministries and returns the trays to be reused.
  • Shade cloth will be installed to protect the melon patch from the direct sun. In early fall, we will need volunteers to harvest, wash and prepare products for distribution to agencies.
  • We are excited about the children learning gardening skills and working in the Garden 9:10. Crystal Turnipseed, a preschool teacher at the church, already has a gardening class once a week with the preschoolers, so she will meet with the kids out in the garden where they will have 2 lowered beds to plant, maintain and harvest their produce.

June 2024 update

  • We are asking the congregation for compost items, especially eggshells and coffee grounds. There are compost bins located in the garden area.
  • The VBS day in the garden was a huge success! The children planted 380 pumpkin seeds.
  • The Garden 9:10 Dedication on June 9th was attended by about 225 people after both services. Several new people signed up to volunteer.
  • Larry Coulter envisions a corner of the garden for growing plants of the Bible, such as grapes, olives, and figs. It will also be a place of meditation and relaxation.

May 2024 update

  • A messaging program called Signal has been set up by Jim Curry to inform our volunteers of the daily tasks to be accomplished in the garden. Polly Diebel emailed all of our core group of volunteers of this opportunity.
  • A group of Montessori students worked recently in the garden, planting seedlings from the greenhouse. White shade cloth has been installed over the garden beds.
  • Joanne and Tim Scruggs have volunteered to lead the Garden 9:10 Prayer Team.
  • A few birds have been spotted in the birdhouses. We are hoping they may be our local screech owls.

April 2024 update

  • The Garden 9:10 Dedication, planned for April 28th, had to be postponed due to the storms and rain. A new date will be announced soon.
  • The pavestone walk and steps into the garden from the parking lot are complete. Stone columns and an iron gate mark the entrance to the garden from the sanctuary parking lot.
  • Dennis Jerke, on the steering committee, has prepared a revised master plan to show correct locations of drainage, swale, storage buildings, and the greenhouse.
  • There were volunteer workdays planned in April to prepare for the Garden 9:10 Dedication.
  • The fence around the garden is complete.
  • Volunteers who have worked 25 hours will be given a Garden 9:10 t-shirt.

March 2024 update

  • Garden Seder was a success!
  • A commercial-grade refrigerator will be purchased for storing produce until pickup.
  • Irrigation has been installed to all the beds.
  • Lake Travis Middle School had a workday on the church grounds on March 28.
  • Volunteers will be able to receive a Garden 9:10 t-shirt when they have worked for several hours. Carolyn Kennedy will keep a record of hours worked.

February 2024 update

  • The well is running and full!
  • Approximately 20 beds are in place on the ground and have been filled with aggregate and dirt. Aggregate is being spread between the beds.
  • A greenhouse is being erected.
  • Construction of the composting area is in process.
  • We will plant vegetables that the Lakeway Crisis Ministries said their clients want, including tomatoes, carrots, green and bush beans, potatoes, squash, peppers, corn, and melons.

January 2024 update

  • A 31,000-gallon water tank has been installed for irrigation of the garden as well as the church campus.
  • Construction of the raised garden beds continues. We have 19 beds to date and will continue to build more. Twenty beds will be planted initially. Once we see the yield, we can develop a timeline for adding beds as we determine additional recipients.
  • A greenhouse has been purchased and should be installed in early January. Seedlings will be grown in the greenhouse and transplanted in the garden beds in mid-March. Installation of shelving and clean-up of the barn are scheduled for early January.
