Lessons from a Cottonwood Grove

Rooted in Christ, flourishing in faith – drawing life from God, not the world.

This sermon was Larry Coulter’s farewell message as he retires after 45 years in ministry, with 10 years at Lakeway Church. Using Jeremiah 17:5-8, he contrasts two types of people – those who trust in themselves versus those who trust in the Lord. Through personal stories and the metaphor of cottonwood trees in the Grand Canyon, he illustrates how spiritual growth progresses from seed to sapling to mature trees, emphasizing the importance of developing deep roots in faith.

Where is your trust planted? If you’ve been feeling dry, anxious, or distant from God, it may be time to shift your trust from human strength to divine provision. This week, choose to be like a tree planted by the water—deeply rooted in Christ, drawing from His never-ending source of life and strength.
