We live in a world obsessed with moving up.

Here is the great paradox of the Christian life: The way up is down. That is the message of Philippians 2. Remember where Paul is when he writes these words. He’s in prison. He’s been stripped of freedom, position, and comfort. Yet he’s writing about joy. Why?

Because Paul understands something we often forget. Joy is not found in getting everything we want. Joy is found in becoming more like Jesus.

Here is the great paradox of the Christian life: The way up is down. That is the message of Philippians 2. Remember where Paul is when he writes these words. He’s in prison. He’s been stripped of freedom, position, and comfort. Yet he’s writing about joy. Why?

Because Paul understands something we often forget. Joy is not found in getting everything we want. Joy is found in becoming more like Jesus.

When Christ becomes the center of life, both living and dying take on new meaning.

There is a question every person answers, whether they realize it or not: “What am I living for?” – Some people live for success. Others live for security, family, possessions, or accomplishments. None of those things is necessarily bad, but there is a problem.

Anything you make the center of your life, other than Jesus Christ, is something you can eventually lose.

But what if there were something you could live for that you could never lose?

When Christ becomes the center of life, both living and dying take on new meaning.

Today we come to the Lord’s table. Communion is another practice Jesus never intended to be merely private. the Lord’s Supper reminds us that we don’t just belong to Christ; because we belong to Christ, we belong to one another.

So, today we are going to do what the church has been doing for 2,000 years. We are going to come together. We are going to examine our hearts. We are going to confess our sins. We are going to pray for one another, and we are going to remember Jesus together. Come to the table.

There are some things in the Christian life you can do alone, but there are some things Jesus designed us to do together. James 5 is one of those passages. James isn’t describing an isolated Christian. He is describing life in the congregation.

Paul now moves from the health of the whole body to the everyday behavior of the people within it.

“You did not come to know Christ that way.”

There should be something noticeably different about people who have been formed by Jesus.

Paul describes conversion almost like changing clothes: put off the old self, be made new in the attitude of your minds, and put on the new self.

He then makes that extremely practical. The new life shows up in what we say, what we do with anger, how we handle conflict, how we speak about others, and whether we hold onto bitterness or extend forgiveness.

A healthy church is not dependent upon a few gifted personalities. It is a body of believers increasingly grounded in truth, becoming like Jesus, serving one another, speaking truth in love, and contributing their part to the health of the whole body.

Jesus gives every believer a role in building His church, and spiritual maturity happens as every part does its work.
