When Christ becomes the center of life, both living and dying take on new meaning.

There is a question every person answers, whether they realize it or not: “What am I living for?” – Some people live for success. Others live for security, family, possessions, or accomplishments. None of those things is necessarily bad, but there is a problem.

Anything you make the center of your life, other than Jesus Christ, is something you can eventually lose.

But what if there were something you could live for that you could never lose?

Because Christ is our life, we can live with joy, humility, purpose, and peace—regardless of our circumstances.

Our circumstances don’t determine our joy; Christ determines our joy.

Paul is writing a letter about JOY from a place where we wouldn’t expect to find much joy.

He is a prisoner.

His freedom has been taken away.

His future is uncertain.

People are attacking his reputation.

And he doesn’t know whether he will live or die.

Yet Philippians is filled with words like: Joy. Rejoice. Gladness. Peace.

How? Because Paul discovered something that changes everything: Our circumstances don’t determine our joy. Christ determines our joy.

There are some things in the Christian life you can do alone, but there are some things Jesus designed us to do together. James 5 is one of those passages. James isn’t describing an isolated Christian. He is describing life in the congregation.

Today we come to the Lord’s table. Communion is another practice Jesus never intended to be merely private. the Lord’s Supper reminds us that we don’t just belong to Christ; because we belong to Christ, we belong to one another.

So, today we are going to do what the church has been doing for 2,000 years. We are going to come together. We are going to examine our hearts. We are going to confess our sins. We are going to pray for one another, and we are going to remember Jesus together. Come to the table.

Following Jesus means putting off the old life and learning a distinctly Christlike way of treating one another.

Paul now moves from the health of the whole body to the everyday behavior of the people within it.

“You did not come to know Christ that way.”

There should be something noticeably different about people who have been formed by Jesus.

Paul describes conversion almost like changing clothes: put off the old self, be made new in the attitude of your minds, and put on the new self.

He then makes that extremely practical. The new life shows up in what we say, what we do with anger, how we handle conflict, how we speak about others, and whether we hold onto bitterness or extend forgiveness.
